I received my Msc (1970) and PhD (1976) in electrical engineering at the
Norwegian Institute of Technology. In 1971 I was awarded a Diplome d'Etudes Approfondies
in applied mathematics at the University of Grenoble. Since 1975 I have held research
management positions with GECO, SINTEF, Merlin Profilers and SERES, before
being appointed professor of Applied Geophysics at the Norwegian Institute of Technology
(now NTNU). I have been visiting professor at the Federal University of Bahia in Salvador,
Brazil, the State University of Campinas, Brazil, Karlsruhe University, Germany,
Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and Colorado School of Mines, USA. Since January 2008 I have been VISTA Professor at NTNU.
I have received the Norwegian Geophysical Award, 1985; the Conrad Schlumberger Award (EAGE), 1993; the Statoil Research Prize, 2003; the Desiderius Award for lifelong achievement (EAGE), 2008.
My research interests are in data processing, modelling and inversion
of seismic and electromagnetic data, parameter estimation techniques
and inverse theory.
