Masterlandsbyen 2008 - Problem Descriptions

In the Gullfakslandsby course last spring, StatoilHydro presented the problems below. The tasks include both traditional problems and evaluation of new technologies. They are briefly described with links to powerpoint presentations with more information.

The following three presentations are introductions to Gullfaks. Even though they are in Norwegian you may find some informative tables and figures about Gullfaks:
Gullfaks history (3.7 MB)
Geology, geophysics and reservoir (52 MB)
Drilling, wells and IOR (2.4 MB)

Production from new formations
The Lunde formation has not been produced and StatoilHydro is evaluating this as a prospect.
Questions:
  • Create a reservoir model for the Lunde formation (Eclipse, Petrel, ...). Well logs and a well production test from an exploration well are available.
  • Estimate reserves and simulate production: well targets, with/without DIACS, with/without water injection, and other possible alternatives.
  • Calculate NPV.
  • Evaluate benefits and drawbacks.
  • Run a risk analysis.

  • Powerpoint presentation (Norwegian, 1.3 MB)

Gulltopp satellite - extended reach well
A 10km extended reach well has been drilled to the Gulltopp satellite from the Gullfaks A platform . Three sidetracks were needed before the target was reached.
    Questions:
  • Add the well path to the existing Eclipse model.
  • Use Eclipse to estimate recovery and production profile with/without water injection.
  • Suggest and evaluate other alternatives.
  • Calculate NPV for the well(s).
  • Evaluate benefits and drawbacks.
  • Run a risk analysis.

  • Powerpoint presentation (English/Norwegian, 0.4 MB)

    Drilling with liner
See the powerpoint presentation below for a very short introduction to the method.

    Effect of geological barriers
Geological barriers are one of the bigger uncertainties in an oil field.
    Questions:
  • Based on seismics (and other data), find the most important barriers in the Brent, Cook and Statfjord formations in the Gullfaks main field.
  • Analyse a few of the barriers in more detail.
  • Make a reservoir model (Eclipse, Petrel, ...).
  • Use the model to evaluate how the barriers (sealing/non-sealing, etc.) influence recovery. Look at several drainage strategies and well targets.
  • Evaluate benefits and drawbacks.
  • Run a risk analysis.
  • Compare barriers to other factors that influence recovery.

Using Integrated Operations (IO) to increase production and to reduce drilling costs
The basis for IO is real-time transfer of off-shore process data to the on-shore organisation. The goal is to control much of the off-shore operations from on-shore. This has several potential benefits:
  • Increased health, environment and safety levels.
  • Optimal production and intervention, i.e. increased production and regularity.
  • More efficient drilling and selection of optimal well targets.
  • Cost savings.

  • StatoilHydro is evaluating IO for use on Gullfaks and asks you to look at these questions:
  • do a literature/web search to find the current status.
  • evaluate IO for use on Gullfaks.
  • what is missing in the current implementations to make it viable?
  • what is the NPV based on your own evaluations and estimated cost reductions.
  • evaluate benefits and drawbacks.
  • run a risk analysis.

  • There is an IO center at NTNU which may support and help you.
    Powerpoint presentation (Norwegian, 2.6 MB)

    New applications for well tractors
This task is broadly divided in two:
  • do a literature/web search to find the current status.
  • use your creativity to find new applications.

  • Questions:
  • what are the limitations?
  • evaluate benefits and drawbacks compared to normal intervention methods.
  • estimate costs compared to normal intervention methods.
  • risk analysis, e.g. what is the cost associated with a failure (operation cannot be carried out, stuck tractor, etc.).

  • Powerpoint presentation (Norwegian, 2.7 MB)

PASF - Polymer Assisted Surfactant Flooding
    Questions:
  • Do a literature/web search on basic PASF chemistry, dosages and past experience in the oil industry.
  • Modify existing Eclipse model (H1 segment) to include PASF. Use new and/or existing wells.
  • Predict production profile and recovery. Look at rel-perm, efficiency of chemicals, injection sequence, adsorption, etc.
  • Calculate NPV for the different scenarios.
  • Evaluate operational and environmental aspects.
  • Run a risk analysis.

  • A lecture about reservoir chemicals and how to adapt Eclipse models will be held.
    Powerpoint presentation (English/Norwegian, 1.0 MB)

Development of the Gullfaks Sør satellite field, including new platform
    Questions:
  • Evaluate platform types and estimate cost of a new platform.
  • Use existing Eclipse model and evaluate several well targets and production strategies.
  • Look at water injection.
  • Estimate reserves and simulate production.
  • Calculate NPV.
  • Evaluate benefits and drawbacks.
  • Run a risk analysis.
