Short profile
Bjørn Ursin received a M.Sc. (1970) from the Norwegian Institute of Technology, a Diplome d′études approfondies (1971) in applied mathematics at the University of Grenoble, France, and a Ph.D. (1976) in electrical engineering, also from the Norwegian Institute of Technology. He held research management positions in GECO, SINTEF, Merlin Profilers and SERES, before he in 1989 was appointed professor of applied geophysics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (formerly Norwegian Institute of Technology) where he is professor emeritus since 2013. He is currently Special Visiting Researcher at the Federal University of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil. In 1991-1992 Ursin was a visiting professor of geophysics at the Federal University of Bahia in Salvador, Brazil, in 2001-2002 he was a visiting scholar at Colorado School of Mines, and in 2010-2011 he was Visiting Researcher at the Laboratoire de Mécanique et d′Acoustique, CNRS, Marseille, France. Ursin was associate editor of Geophysical Prospecting in 1985-1986 and editor in 1986-1989. He was assistant editor of Geophysics in 1995-1999. Ursin received the Norwegian Geophysical award in 1985, the EAEG Conrad Schlumberger Award in 1993, the Statoil Research Prize in 2003, the Desiderius Erasmus Award for Lifelong Achievement and Honorary membership from EAGE in 2008 and Honorary membership from the SEG in 2010. He is a member of IEEE, SIAM, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, a fellow of the Institute of Physics and a member of the European Academy of Sciences.

Bjørn Ursin′s research interests are in data processing, modelling and inversion of seismic and electromagnetic data, parameter estimation techniques and inverse theory.
